TAZARA Revitalisation Project Enters Construction Phase with New Training Centre & Operations Control Centre

Construction officially begins on TAZARA's new Training Centre and Operations Control Centre in Dar es Salaam as part of the US$1.4 billion Railway Revitalisation Project.

The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) has officially commenced construction of a new Training Centre and a state-of-the-art Operations Control Centre in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, marking one of the first major infrastructure milestones under its ambitious Railway Revitalisation Project.

The new Training Centre will enhance technical, operational, and managerial capabilities by providing structured education, technology transfer, and workforce development for the railway sector. The facility is expected to strengthen local expertise required to operate and maintain the modernised railway network.

Alongside it, the Operations Control Centre will become the central command hub for coordinating and monitoring train movements across TAZARA’s 1,860-kilometre railway network, improving operational efficiency, communication, safety, emergency response, and fleet utilisation.

The construction follows the September 2025 Public-Private Partnership (PPP) concession agreement between TAZARA and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). The agreement includes an investment exceeding US$1.4 billion for railway rehabilitation, infrastructure upgrades, and the acquisition of new locomotives and rolling stock.

The revitalisation programme is expected to significantly improve freight transport efficiency while strengthening regional trade and economic connectivity between Tanzania and Zambia, positioning TAZARA as one of Africa’s most important strategic railway corridors.
