Transport for London (TfL) has officially launched the world’s first city-wide AI-managed traffic control system, covering 4,500 signalized intersections across Greater London. The SCOOT AI system, developed in partnership with Siemens Mobility, uses real-time data from thousands of sensors, CCTV cameras, and connected vehicles to dynamically optimize signal timing across the entire network.
Early results from the 6-month pilot in Zone 1 showed a 22% reduction in average journey times, a 15% decrease in vehicle idling (reducing emissions), and a 31% improvement in bus schedule adherence โ demonstrating the system’s multi-modal benefits.
The system also prioritizes emergency vehicles, granting them green-light corridors and reducing response times by an average of 4 minutes โ a potentially life-saving improvement for ambulance services.
