Autonomous Cargo Ship Completes First Trans-Pacific Voyage

Rolls-Royce and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines have successfully completed the world’s first autonomous cargo ship voyage across the Pacific Ocean, with the 300-metre bulk carrier MV Tokei operating without any human intervention for 8,200 km from Yokohama, Japan to Long Beach, California.

The vessel, equipped with Rolls-Royce’s INTELLISHIP autonomous navigation system, used AI-powered cameras, radar, lidar, and AIS data to navigate traffic separation schemes, avoid weather systems, and coordinate port arrival autonomously. A remote monitoring centre in Tokyo maintained oversight throughout the voyage but did not intervene.

The successful crossing represents a major breakthrough for the maritime industry, which faces a chronic shortage of qualified seafarers estimated at 26,000 officers globally. Autonomous and remote-controlled vessels could significantly reduce operational costs, with crew expenses representing up to 30% of total vessel operating costs.
