Panama Canal Announces $10 Billion Fourth Lock Expansion

๐Ÿ—“ ๐Ÿ‘ 7 Views โฑ 1 min read

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has announced a $10 billion investment to construct a fourth set of locks, which would increase the waterway’s capacity by an additional 40% and allow the passage of vessels up to 500 metres in length โ€” larger than the current Neo-Panamax standard.

The announcement comes after record-breaking congestion and drought conditions in 2023 that forced the canal to restrict traffic, causing widespread supply chain disruptions and highlighting the vulnerability of global trade to this critical chokepoint through which 5% of world trade passes annually.

The fourth lock system, designed to accommodate Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCV) of up to 25,000 TEU, will be constructed on a parallel alignment to the existing Neopanamax locks. Construction is expected to take 12 years, with Phase 1 operations possible by 2032. The project will also include major water management improvements to increase the canal’s resilience to climate-driven drought.
