Japan’s Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) has unveiled its next-generation SCMaglev train, capable of carrying 1,000 passengers at sustained commercial speeds of 700 km/h โ making it the fastest passenger train ever developed for regular service.
The train uses superconducting maglev technology, floating 10 cm above a specially designed guideway, eliminating friction and enabling unprecedented speeds. The TokyoโOsaka Chuo Shinkansen line, set to open its first phase in 2027, will cover the 438 km journey in under 40 minutes compared to the current 2 hours 15 minutes by conventional Shinkansen.
The total project cost is estimated at ยฅ9 trillion (approximately $60 billion USD), making it one of the most expensive infrastructure projects in history. JR Central plans to fund the majority from internal resources and government-backed long-term loans.
“This is not just a train. This is Japan’s gift to the future of human mobility,” said JR Central President Shunsuke Niwa at the official unveiling ceremony in Tokyo.
